The focus of my creative research is centered on narrative structures where form and content become integrated in the, not so literally defined, form of a book. In creating artist books the method and the message are interdependent; the content, form, paper, printing, and binding are partners in the design and art making process. I strive to give each book I make its own voice. It is my intent that these books engage the viewer to be an active participant—to want to hold the book and turn the pages.
I earned a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Houston and a MFA in Visual Communication Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. I teach graphic design, book arts and design history at Florida Atlantic University. An interest in handmade papers, unique book structures, letterpress printing, folktales and trivia has sparked my imagination and provided content for my bookworks for over twenty years. My artist books are exhibited nationally and internationally and reside in collections both public and private including Tate Britain, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Harvard, Yale, UCLA, Bienes Center for the Literary Arts, Sackner Archives of Concrete and Visual Poetry and many others.
